Older People

The Silver Line

The Silverline operates the only confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK that's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our specially trained helpline team:

  • offer information, friendship and advice
  • link callers to local groups and services
  • offer regular friendship calls
  • protect and support older people who are suffering abuse and neglect

We also offer telephone and letter friendship schemes where we match volunteers with older people based on their interests; facilitated group calls; and help to connect people with local services in their area.

Friends of the Elderly

Based in Surrey, the Visiting Friends befriending service run by our sister charity Triangle can help you feel more connected with the world around you.

Are you looking for friendship?

We are more likely to experience loneliness as we get older as our circumstances change and we don't have people to call on us as much as we used to. Loneliness can have a devastating impact on our lives, but there are many ways we can make sure we stay connected with the people and communities around us as we get older.

If you are experiencing loneliness, or know someone who is, our befriending service could help.

What do visiting Friends volunteers do?
Just like a true friend, our volunteers will take time to listen to you and share life's ups and downs - chatting about current affairs, listening to your news or just discussing the weather.

As your friendship with your volunteer grows, you may find life looks more interesting again. If you have lived alone for many years, you may also find your confidence returns as your volunteer helps you get out and about in your local community.

Who is eligible?
Visiting Friends is a high-quality volunteer home visiting service for:

  • people who live alone, in the Walton-on-Thames, Hersham, Woking or Weybridge areas.
  • People over 60, who have little contact with family or friends.
